The Limerick City Care and Repair Project provides minor repair and maintenance services to older people by using a pool of trustworthy volunteers and handypersons.  The Project is currently being piloted in the Our Lady Queen of Peace area of Limerick City.

Limerick City Care and Repair Programme consists of two services:

  1. The Repair Service  (Minor Repair Service: 061-324703 / 087-3906793)
  2. The Trades Referral Service (a register of reliable and honest tradespersons)

About the Kind of Jobs Undertaken

Jobs range from replacing light bulbs to fitting door chains and spy-holes or smoke alarms, putting up shelves, moving light pieces of furniture across a room, and taking down curtains. Volunteers in effect provide a willing pair of helping hands to do a variety of small tasks that an older person may find difficult to do. A “job” is expected to take no longer than an hour, though many small tasks may be undertaken during the same visit. The service is free of charge; the client only pays for the cost of materials used. Donations are always welcome.

About the Trades Referral Service

Our pool of volunteers and handypersons is not intended to replace the need for specialist skilled tradespersons. Often people do not know how to go about getting reliable tradespeople. If the required job is beyond the scope of Limerick City Care and Repair, we will endeavour to supply the names of trustworthy tradespeople from a register which we will build up over time.

About Our Volunteers

Volunteers are of all ages and both sexes. Some offer specialist skills (e.g. electrical or joinery expertise) while other are simply interested in DIY generally. All volunteers are vetted and carry official Care and Repair identification cards. We are particularly interested in attracting retired persons as volunteers.

Limerick City Care and Repair is supported by: Age Action Ireland and Paul Partnership.

About Age Action Ireland

Age Action Ireland is the national organisation which works to improve the quality of life of all older people and their carers by enabling them to live full, independent and satisfying lives for as long as they wish in their own homes.  In partnership with Irish Life, Age Action Ireland is developing Care and Repair Services for older people in Ireland.
