PRESS RELEASE – 10.00 a.m. Monday 20th February 2012

Jan O’Sullivan TD, Minister for Housing and Planning at the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government this morning launched a Community and Social Enterprise Programme for Limerick. The programme is being delivered by Limerick City Enterprise Board and PAUL Partnership on behalf of the Limerick Regeneration Agencies.

Minister O’Sullivan praised Limerick City Enterprise Board and the PAUL Partnership for their role in designing and delivering this comprehensive year long programme aimed at increasing capacity in the community, at identifying community and social enterprises and at developing these enterprises to create sustainable jobs in the community.

Speaking at the launch Brendan Kenny, Chief Executive Officer of Limerick Regeneration said that the objective of the Limerick Regeneration Agencies is to improve the quality of life for residents within key Limerick City locations. While this can be achieved through the creation and implementation of a Programme for a radical new landscape in these areas the key to success is in the creation of jobs in the areas and the building of community capacity to either make or take jobs in the future.

Eamon Ryan, CEO Limerick City Enterprise Board outlined the elements of the CSE programme:

The Community and Social Enterprise Programme (CSE) is a 4 phase programme designed to build community and social enterprise capabilities among community in Limerick in order that they can stimulate greater interest in building community and social enterprises. Community leaders who undertake this programme will develop the skills necessary to have an on-going impact in their communities in building a strong, supportive and positive environment where community and social enterprise can grow and flourish.

Phase 1 is a series of 2 Masterclass Seminars in March 2012 designed to give community leaders, social entrepreneurs, policy makers and business owners the opportunity to look at examples of real projects that are helping to build stronger communities as a means of creating jobs and building skills.

Phase 2 is the Community and Social Enterprise Leaders Training and is critical to the success of Phases 3 and 4 of the Programme. Community leaders who undertake this programme will develop the skills necessary to have an on-going impact in their communities in building a strong, supportive and positive environment where community and social enterprise can grow and flourish.

Phase 3 of the programme will be the identification and selection of 12 community or social businesses/business ideas who will participate in Phase 4, the Enterprise Development Programme.

Phase 4 is the Community and Social Enterprise Development Programme where 12 businesses/business ideas will be taken through a practical development process to assist in the start up and success of the business ideas. The programme will comprise taught content, case studies, practical work, group work, peer learning and mentoring and will be organized in 4 2-day modules between September and December 2012.
